Suriname, once known as the Dutch Guyana, is one of the smallest countries of South America. It’s bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, French Guyana, Guyana and Brazil. Suriname obtained its independence in 1975 from the Netherlands and is now one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the Americas. Some of the spoken languages are Dutch, Sranantongo, Sarnami Hindoestani, Javanese and Chinese.
